Web by John Wyndham

Web by John Wyndham

I picked up this small 141 page paperback at a book stall for the princely sum of $1 in late 2017 and quickly read it. It is a science fiction novel published by Wyndham's estate in 1979, ten years after his death. The blurb reads as follows:

A millionaire English lord dreams of founding a Utopian community on a remote Pacific island...but it is already inhabited by a species programmed to resist and dominate any invader.

It started slowly and was ponderous reading initially but it quickly ramped up into an excellent story. I wonder if The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone owes anything to this particular book. I read that one towards the end of 2016 (see http://timsbestreads.blogspot.com.au/p/the-hatching-by-ezekiel-boone-httpwww.html) and it is very similar. I can't say much more without spoiling the story line of Web.

I am a great Wyndham fan and I have many of his novels in my library - and they are always worth a re-read. With this one now added, the list reads

The Day of the Triffids (1951)
The Kraken Wakes (1953)
The Chrysalids (1955)
The Midwich Cuckoos (1957)
Trouble with Lichen (1960)
Web (1979)

He would have to be one of the most original of science fictions writers, especially given that he wrote so long ago.

Also worth checking out The Night of The Triffids (see http://timsbestreads.blogspot.com.au/p/the-night-of-triffids-by-simon-clark.html) which I read earlier in the year.
