Conan Doyle by Michael Coren
I must admit that I was never a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I probably read a few of the series when I was much younger and certainly watched many of the Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone(he was definitely the best Sherlock Holmes).
In 2015, I read all the Conan Doyle books about Professor Challenger - see http://timsbestreads.blogspot.com.au/p/sir-arthur-conan-doyle.html - and enjoyed them immensely. This being the case, I decided it was time to read a biography of the author himself.
I knew a fair bit about Doyle already - his beliefs in Spiritualism, his love-hate relationship with his most famous character Sherlock Holmes, etc.
I chose the 1993 biography by Michael Coren, a relatively short (224 pages) but well researched bio.
The book does a good job in discussing Doyle's childhood in Scotland, the experiences that shaped his life and views and the prolific nature of his writing and engagements. He was a man who packed much more into his 71 years than we mere mortals could ever hope to do.
Recommended reading for all lovers of any of his books.
