The President's Assassin by Brian Haig

I was at Moonee Ponds the other day for a coffee and picked up a hardcopy version of this book on spec for the grand price of $3.50.

I Hadn't heard of Brian Haig but the book was written in 2005 and turned out to be one of quite a few political thrillers written by him. Incidentally, I found out that he is the son of former USA Secretary of State Alexander Haig.

The blurb paints an action packed scenario.

"YOU CAN'T STOP US. THERE WILL BE OTHERS, AND THE PRESIDENT WILL BE HISTORY IN THE NEXT TWO DAYS."
It's a mass execution: six people shot and killed in a Virginia mansion, one of them the White House Chief of Staff. But that isn't the reason Sean Drummond is called in. Newly enlisted in a CIA cell called the Office of Special Projects, the Army lawyer knows the bodies are just a warning. Because the killer left a note.
Now the hunt begins for the ultimate hitman: brilliant, coldhearted, with an insider's knowledge of D.C. If Drummond fails, the world will never be the same --- and someone will collect the $100 million bounty on the President's head.

Sean Drummond makes a good hero, working with his mind rather than with the usual American wham and bam approach. I must have liked the book as I read it from start to finish (404 pages) the same day I bought it. Well, that's another day gone, but in a worthy cause.

The plot is a good one but the ending is quite implausible and does detract from what up till then has been a great read. You are certainly kept on your toes as the murder count rises.

I'll give is 4 stars and I may even check out Brian Haig at the local library and see if the have any of his other books (this is the fifth book in the Sean Drummond series).
