Diana Gabaldon: Cross Stitch

My wife Lois was given the task of reading this book as part of a bookclub offering. She gave up on it (almost unheard of for Lois) but I read the back cover blurb and decided to give it a go as it was fantasy genre and sounded ok. Well, it is no wonder that it was on the bookclub reading list for a women's only bookclub – it can best be described at Mills and Boone on steriods (no, I have never read any Mills and Boone – I am only speculating here). It was a case of quickly bypassing all the love scenes and ponderings and trying to concentrate on the action.

Here is the book description from wikipedia:

Outlander (published in the United Kingdom as Cross Stitch) is the first in a series of eight historical multi-genre novels by Diana Gabaldon. Published in 1991, it focuses on 20th century nurse Claire Randall, who time travels to 18th century Scotland and finds adventure and romance with the dashing James Fraser. A mix of several genres, the Outlander series features elements of historical fiction, romance, adventure and science fiction/fantasy. Outlander won the Romance Writers of America's RITA Award for Best Romance of 1991. A television adaptation of the Outlander series premiered on Starz in the US on August 9, 2014.

Well, I saw it through, not realising it was the first of 8 books. It finishes mid sentence with the story to be continued in book 2. No, I won't be reading book 2. It is indeed a good story but alas, one volume is enough for me. I wish you all the best if you decide to persevere further.
