C. S. Lewis: A Life by Alister McGrath

Fantastically detailed and very readable biography of author, philosopher and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis, the author of the Narnia Chronicles. Published in 2013, fifty years after Lewis's death. I bought this book at the same time I bought Clive James' translation of The Divine Comedy (May 2014) and read them one after the other.

I have many of Lewis' books (all of which I have read at one time or another and all published during his years at Oxford) so have always wanted to know a bit more about the man behind the words. Here are his works in my collection:

The Chronicles of Narnia (all 7 books)
The Cosmic Trilogy (his 3 science fiction books)

Yes, I am a fan of C. S. Lewis! That's probably why I was keen to read this new biography. Could hardly put it down once I had started. I'm not going to say anymore - you should read it for yourself!

Now I am keen to read a biography of J. R. R. Tolkein, the author of Lord of the Rings. I have read most of his work and have some of them at home in my library (Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Children of Hurin). He was a contemporary of Lewis at Oxford from the early 1930's onwards and each helped the other develop their separate ideas. Stay tuned!
